Observation. Structure. Distillation.
KONTEXTWERKSTATT is an independent publishing project examining how perception is shaped, how systems distribute responsibility, and what remains invisible within familiar explanations.
At its centre is a simple question:
What is actually carrying this?
The work begins with irritations, contradictions and seemingly minor observations. Rather than resolving them too quickly, it traces them back to the assumptions, structures and conditions that make them possible.
Questions are not neutral containers. They direct attention, define what appears relevant and determine what remains outside the frame.
Solutions are not neutral either. A solution may work and still create new burdens or shift existing ones elsewhere.
The name
The name KONTEXTWERKSTATT is deliberately German.
Kontext means context. A Werkstatt is a workshop: a place where material is examined, tested, taken apart and brought into relation.
Here, context is not treated as additional background information. It is part of the structure that determines what can be seen, asked and answered.
Forms of work
KONTEXTWERKSTATT currently works through three publishing formats:
Verdichtung
Conceptual distillation
A Verdichtung identifies the load-bearing core of a concept or familiar idea. It does not attempt to explain everything. It asks what remains essential once habitual meanings and surrounding assumptions are stripped away.
Belichtung
Essayistic inquiry
A Belichtung keeps an irritation open beyond the first available explanation. It begins with a concrete observation and follows the shift in perception that occurs when its wider context becomes visible.
Architekturprüfung
Structural examination
An Architekturprüfung examines the architecture surrounding a question, problem or proposed solution.
It considers the assumptions built into the initial framing, the functions and information pathways within a system, and the distribution of effort, risk, responsibility and consequence.
Its purpose is not to reject solutions from the outside. It follows them closely enough to see what they solve, what they create and where their costs are carried.
Current work
Current lines of inquiry include:
Artificial intelligence and human judgement
How do records, categories and existing institutional templates shape what AI systems are able to recognise?
What happens when human judgement and machine-generated patterns repeatedly confirm one another?
And where does responsibility lie when perception, assessment and verification are distributed between a person and a technical system?
The cost of cheap text
AI makes the production of text faster and less expensive. Understanding, verifying and contextualising that text remains human work.
What happens when production becomes inexpensive while the cost of careful reception is shifted to other people?
Electricity, surplus and system architecture
Under what conditions does electricity become surplus—and when is it treated as scarce or wasted?
How do infrastructure, market rules and institutional responsibilities shape the problem before a technical solution is proposed?
Conversations and research
Some of this work develops through conversations with researchers, practitioners and people working within the systems being examined.
These conversations are not used merely to confirm an existing argument. They help identify missing information, competing perspectives and the limits of the initial question.

Language

About
KONTEXTWERKSTATT was founded by Jeanne Tosch in Berlin.
Her work combines close observation with structural analysis and examines the relationship between perception, institutional frameworks, technology and responsibility.
